Yesterday I hugged Jessica & her dad goodbye on the Pontremoli train platform and headed a little bit further south and west towards the sea, only about a 40 minute train ride. They were reluctant for a single girl to head to this little space alone but I assured them I would be ok...of course, hoping all the while that I was right. They were very protective of me and wanted to make sure I would be ok.
I am here now and found me a place overlooking the Ligurian Sea. This scene above is Manarola, the 2nd of the 5 towns. Cinque means 5 in Italian...5 towns. And it is as beautiful as everyone had told me. Quaint and private.
I'm a planner but sometimes I throw that work out the window and decide to just play it by ear and trust that God will open doors for me as I need them. Which is what happened, by the sweat of my brow. I arrived and the hostel I was going to stay at was closed for a few more weeks on that particular town. Not wanting to take the train to the next town with my little suitcase in tow, I decided to start my asking-strangers- strategy. After 2 shop keepers, I was directed to another shop who knew of someone. She got on her cell phone, and within 5 minutes a very sweet woman appeared with some keys, stated her price (much higher than a hostel of course) and said it overlooked the ocean. It was a little cheaper than what a previous shop had quoted me, so I went for it, ready to relinquish my suitcase. This is my little apartment for the night right above the top of town, with an incredible view. It's not really cheap to stay on the island b/c it is a tourist attraction but it's also not high season either, so I'm definitely counting my blessings.
I spent about 5 minutes in the apartment and then left anything heavy and took my camera out for a walk to Riomaggiore which is a 25 minute walk along the coast to the next town(the first one).
Manarola is a sweet quiet sea town. These old men were sitting here on this bench as I left. By the time I got back around 4 hours later, they were still sitting here except their little group had grown by a few more. The sun had lowered enough to where their faces were lit so I could see who they were and they could see me. I waved to show my support as I passed.
If you see that little path of white rocks - follow it up the side of the hill along the sky and my apartment is just next to the first peachy one you see.
At the end of my little walk b/w the 1st and 2nd towns, I stopped at this lovely little cafe that walkers have to walk through as they pass by. RickSteve's (travel guide) recommended it as well. The waiter convinced me of brochette with anchovies which was incredible. Oh man. Yummy. I am a fan now.

Just like I remember it--right down to the pic of the old men! They just sit there and people-watch all day long! Ha. Oh my goodness, had the best pizza of my whole life in Riomaggiore and then drove up on the lookout on the road coming in and ate it in the car at night while we played Tony Bennett and "That's Amore!" and just devoured pizza and looked at the little village lights, great memory.
